I'll admit it, I have put my marketing efforts into other social sites over Twitter, but last week a high school teacher I am friends with asked me if I am on Twitter. I told him I was, but that my business partner Monika mainly does our tweeting. He gave me his twitter handle, but I was busy on Instagram at the time and didn't check it until yesterday.

When I did check his handle, I was shocked, blown away in fact! As of today he has 51.2K followers! This is the stuff my marketing dreams are made of! I was also shocked because he's this super quiet guy who is very dedicated to his students and school, who knew he's this crazy good tweeter too?

So Who Uses Twitter and Why?

When I originally signed up for twitter a few years ago, I only used it to creep on public figures I admire, Well, and maybe some ex-boyfriends. But what I did discover is that twitter is a great research and marketing tool. Twitter users not only follow celebrities, they follow brands. Since so many twitter users follow brands it makes sense for marketers to be on twitter; it is targeted for businesses.

Twitter is a mix of micro-blogging and social networking.

You have a maximum of 140 characters, so it's similar to texting. You don't have room for emotional fluff.

Tweeting offers many advantages for whatever it is that you promote.

1) Convenience and Speed - you can keep your followers up-to-date quickly via your phone! 2) Followers - the more good tweets you post the more followers you will gain. 3) Viral Marketing - when your tweets are informative people will re-tweet them. This is how your tweets can take on a life of their own.

Here are a few more cool features that twitter has that other social sites don't:

1) Facebook - your tweets appear in the feeds of all your follower's feeds, it isn't filtered like Facebook. 2) YouTube - your tweet can contain a link or video. 3) Pinterest - with twitter you can share a photo and have a conversation. Having dialogue on Pinterest is not as simple. 4) LinkedIn - twitter allows you to follow anyone and have anyone follow you, while LinkedIn requires a two-way agreement to "follow".

Go get on Twitter and start talking! Listen to what others are tweeting about (in or out of your niche) and then join this fast-paced smorgasbord of ideas and information sharing. When tweeting hit the sweet spot, the emotional triggers of your target audience, and give them the information they want to hear! Be sure to include your website in your bio and your twitter handle on all your other social media sites.

And now you know that your kid's social studies teacher is killing it on twitter, you have to start tweeting! If you want to see how to do it, check out Mr. Purcell @RoadTestRuss
